Research pin-point

There are many things that needed to be further research about and it is not only the execution section. To be able to convey the message well, I have to understand in both the parents and children's point of view. Hence, I came up with a few questions that can guide me in doing the research and at the same time manage it properly to finalize this project well.

Missing child:
- What mostly causes it ? I'm sure not all of them ran on their own.
- What are the parents doing when their child got kidnapped / lost?
- In the child's point of view, what do you think the child is feeling when that happened? Like do they follow willingly because of the candy given by the stranger or the sweet talk?

Mirror:
- What I have posted before; fully mirrored or partially?
- What kind of message is strong enough to be convey to aware parents of this matter?

Door (lenticular):
- What is most suitable material to create this?
- Should the door be fully covered or just in the middle?
- Will this technique work? What is the suitable angle for the images depending on the height?
- What are the average height of the children below 12? What about the adults?
- What is visual is most efficient to convey the message; realistic, semi-realistic or graphic? Though I would pick semi realistic.

Also:
- Will I be able to manage this project efficiently? I should have a timeline for this!

Execution Ideas (Mirror)

From the idea I have on this medium is the mirror that have a sticker on it. Since it's a prototype, I haven't figured out whether for the final of the mirror should it be fully mirror or just that particular section only that is a mirror. Just like what I have proposed before, the part where the  reflection of the child will be where the missing kid picture is posted.

In the figure below, I have create a wireframe of how the design would be like. This is just a rough and the color have not been decided yet. However, one color is definite that is red as it gives warning and it can easily grab attention. It may change if there's any other better way of conveying this message.

I added the 'xxxxxx' to indicate the information stated as what all missing kids' poster have; that is name, age and the last seen of the child. The mirror is purposely positioned at the bottom as most missing children are most consists of the younger age.

Also, compare this media and the lenticular art, this seems to be easier. Hence, I might be doing this first so that later I can concentrate more on the other.

Presentation day

Today is the day where we present our ideas and thankfully it went well. Just before the presentation starts, I tried searching for infos if there's any recent cases of missing child and good thing nothing turns up. Well hopefully. Anyway, this is what I presented; my proposed idea and it titled "Missing Alert".

Execution Method

Since both my ideas can be placed at the same location, that is a mirror and a toilet door,  I thought of combining it as a piece of art. Of course, it is both separated design and placed opposite but easier for the audience to see the connection. Also, it can both be made with the same shape.

One side is shown the door and the other is the mirror. As for the door, I thought of doing it lenticular. Instead of doing it 3D lenticular, I'm doing it in a zig zag pattern images, which is two images in different angle of the same plane. However, more research on how it can be done is needed.

Example of two side images
makezine.com (2009)

The door with two angles…. where image 1 can be seen by adult and image 2 can be seen at children height.

Image 1 is a smiling stranger but has a knife holding on, to show don't trust any stranger while image 2 is a message to kids, the candy looks nice but the person -evil looking stranger- giving it is scary.

On the other hand, the mirror is placed at the lower side is because that's about the average kids height.

To make both of it stand, I would propose to use stereofoam at the bottom to keep them stand.

Proposed solution - Ambient Media-

Regarding the info in the previous post, something had to be done to open the eyes of parents in keep in their child in safe security. Hence, I have proposed some ways to remind parents -mothers especially- to always keep their child at sight and to also remind them of the missing child case can happen to anyone.

My first idea is to recreate a missing child poster on the mirror for kids in the toilet, which on the section where the missing child is attached, that will be the mirror. Hence, when a child is washing their hands, the mirror will be replaced with the child's reflection and it will look as if the child is the missing kid. It is something that to remind parents that they wouldn't want their child's turn in that poster.

A simple sketch to get the idea imaginable - The whole piece is the mirror itself and the poster can be like a sticker (printed media)

Second idea is to give out the message using the door of the family toilet. There will have a scary looking man giving out something. From the parents point of view, the man will be holding onto a knife, like threatening them. Otherwise, from the children point of view, it will seems like the guy is giving out lollipop / candy. A slight message for the parent to teach their child not to trust strangers.

Inspiration from:

A lenticular printing ad created by ANAR foundation that gives different messages to different audience. In a certain angle, people will see the normal side of the child. However in a lower angle, the people -mostly kids- will see the bruised boy.

The rough side view and the different images depending on the angle looking it from.

*Both ideas are accepted*

Missing Child Awareness

The topic of awareness I have chosen is missing children. Children have been missing a lot recently, especially when the parents are not supervising them. In the recent missing child case that was uproar when a two year old toddler, Siti Sofea Emelda was found beheaded two days later near by the Sungai Klang in last May. The mother wasn't by her side when the little toddler was kidnapped by a dark skinned foreigner.

In another cases, the one which is most published and probably everyone remembers is the case of Nurin Jazlin. The girl was reported missing on 20 August 2007 when she was on her way to the night market near her house in Wangsa Maju. A month later, she was then found, stuffed into a new sport bag in a fetal position, naked. She was sexually abused and cruelest of all, her genitals were stuffed with brinjal and cucumber which caused her abdomen to rupture.

There are also many other cases involving child gone missing. Hence I think this is a suitable awareness to be alert to all Malaysian so that the parents will keep their children supervised.
